About the Nigerian Buns Recipe

How to make Nigerian buns

Buns may have Nigerian or African roots but trust me when I tell you that despite this fact, many consumers of this Nigerian Dessert still have no clue that there’s a difference between Buns and Puff Puff.

They use them as interchangeably as Asun and Nkwobi, which are two dishes we also mistake with each other.

Difference between Buns and Puff Puff

You may have been confused or deceived for years, but your time of enlightenment has come, brothers and sisters of Food.

Figuring out the difference between Buns and Puff Puff is as simple as identifying the difference in their texture.

While Buns are often rock hard on the outside, Puff Puff on the other hand are soft on the outside just as it is soft on the inside.

Puff Puffs are also oily on the outside while Buns are not.

Step 1: Take your medium sized bowl (doesn’t matter if it’s plastic, glass or ceramic) and mix all the dry ingredients together (Flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, grated lime, and nutmeg.).

Step 2: Now add the wet ingredients like the whole milk, eggs (optional), vanilla flavoring and melted butter.

Stir altogether until the batter is thick and smooth to the point that you can pick it up in a spoon.

Step 3: Now we’re ready for frying. Grab your Sauce pan and pour oil to about the level of your pinky finger.

You want it nice and deep. You can’t dare be stingy with your oil here or else you risk ending up with Buns that look like flat Akara 🤣.

Step 4: Either use your hand or a spoon to scoop some batter into the hot oil. I prefer to use my hand so I can get it nice and round.

However, in your excitement don’t add too much into the pan per batch or else you risk overcrowding it.

Step 5: Let them fry for a few minutes until they are golden brown in color, then roll it over to it’s other side.

Step 6: Once you’re satisfied with their Golden brown look, use a long spoon to fetch all the Buns from the oil into a napkin or tissue to soak the excess oil.

Step 7: Finally (optionally also), if you want that extra sugary feel to it, I usually would roll each Bun in a plate of granulated sugar.

And that’s the recipe for how to make Nigerian Buns!

Now over to you
