About the Zobo Drink Recipe

Zobo drink recipe, how to make zobo

Just in case you’re a tad confused as to what I’m talking about, the more generally accepted name for this Nigerian drink recipe is Hibiscus Tea or Sorrel drink depending on what part of the World you come from.

The name “Zobo” is short for “Zoborodo” which is gotten from a plant in the Hibiscus family called Roselle plant.

Now that we’ve all been introduced, enough plant Biology for now and let’s delve into our ingredients.

Ingredients for making Zobo Drink

  • 2 Cups of dried Zobo leaves (Buy on Jumia for up to 30% off. Click here)
  • 1 glove of Garlic
  • 1 big ripe Pineapple
  • 1 small piece of Ginger
  • Pieces of fruit of your choice among Beetroot, Pineapple, Mango or Orange.
  • Cubes of Ice
  • Lots of water
  • Sugar (as desired)

Preparations

This one is not Indomie that you’ll just pour inside pot and start cooking O. There are some preparations that precede the tutorial proper.

If you neglect them for one reason or the other, whatever you end up with, drink it like that 😂.

  • First rinse out the dust from the Zobo leaves and grind the cloves into powder.
  • Also wash and peel the skin of the Ginger before you grind it rough (not smooth).
  • Wash, peel and slice your Beetroot, Pineapple, Mango or Orange into thin pieces.

Now you’re ready for the main event.

Directions for how to make Zobo Drink

It’s pretty easier than you think, trust me.

Step 1: Put the rinsed Zobo leaves into a clean pot, pour sufficient water until it covers the leaves and leave to cook on medium heat for 5 minutes.

Step 2: Add your Ginger plus the Garlic and add more water in the pot. Leave to cook for 30 more minutes so that the leaves can get soft.

Step 3: After 30 mins, bring the pot down and leave to cook while you blend the Beetroot, Pineapple, Mango or Orange.

Step 4: Once it has cooled down, sieve out the Zobo leaves and pour the juice through a chiffon cloth to effectively separate any tiny particles from the juice.

Step 5: Also take the bended fruit juice and sift the chaff away using a Chiffon cloth. Pour the smooth extracted fruit juice into the extracted Zobo juice.

Step 6:  Add sugar for taste according to how serious or not your sugar cravings are.

Step 7: Pour ice cubes into the Zobo drink as well as some slices of Beetroot, Pineapple, Mango or Orange (or just put all of them 😁).

Step 8: Consumption time! Your Hibiscus tea/Sorrel drink is ready.

How to preserve Zobo drink

Supposing you prepared one large bucket for you and your family. Chances are (except your family is as large as a hungry Battalion) you won’t be able to finish drinking it in a day.

And since we don’t want you to opt for chemical, unnatural preservatives, we suggest you use either of the following methods to preserve your Zobo drink:

Option 1 – Freeze it: Mind you, this is for people who have constant electricity supply (don’t look at me, I’m not among). If you’re also not in that category, look at option 2.

Option 2 – Ration & Dry it: Properly measure the exact quantity you and your family needs and dry the rest under the Sun. Leave it always crispy dry

Option 3 – Use food preservatives: A small number of food spices can significantly contribute a great deal to the preservation of this drink, some of which are Lime, Garlic and Ginger mixture, Kola nut, Cinnamon and Nutmeg.

Option 4 – Preservatives 🙄: This is the last option. Only use this if you’re interested in selling, necessitated by the fact that you’d have to store your Hibiscus drinks in bottles prior to being sold.

Benefits & Advantages of drinking Zobo

Here’s all you stand to benefit from drinking Hibiscus Tea (Sorrel drink).

  • It reduces blood pressure
  • It lowers Cholesterol
  • It protects the Liver
  • It contains anti-cancer properties
  • It is an anti-bacteria and anti-inflammatory agents
  • (This one is for the ladies) It reduces Menstrual pain.

Side effects & Disadvantages of Drinking Zobo

Anything that has an advantage has a disadvantage, so the tale goes. As it turns out, it’s not just a tall tales.

It’s also very true in this case. Here are a few notable side effects of drinking Zobo in men and women:

  • It reduces blood pressure (so people with low blood pressure shouldn’t dare drink this).
  • It reduces the number of Oestrogen in females.
  • It can prevent Pregnancy (Yes. Really.).
  • It can make you less productive because it slows down the body.
