About my Chapman drink recipe

Chapman drinks are a common occurrence in many Nigerian parties. In fact, I once went for a Wedding where they mixed the Chapman inside a Water dispenser container (it seriously lacked sufficient sugar but hey, it was a low budget Wedding so I couldn’t complain 🙄).

Legend has it that this drink has its origins from the Ikoyi Country Club in Lagos, Nigeria years and years ago where it was said that a Bartender make a drink for an expatriate called Mr.Chapman as a farewell gesture to him.

As it turns out, different people have preference for different sides when taking this party drink. Some prefer taking their Chapman with Watermelon, some prefer it mixed with Zobo, and some whom I Dobale for take theirs with Campari (Twale 🙌).

So if you have plans to throw a party and need a Chapman recipe for 100 guest, or you’re expecting a way smaller gathering…or in fact, you just want to make it for you and your kids at home, then this recipe is for you.

I promise you that this is probably the easiest Drink recipe you will ever come across, one far less complex even than my Tiger Nuts drink, Vanilla Yogurt and Hibiscus Tea recipes.

Here are the ingredients you’re going to need to get this party started:

Ingredients

  • 2 types of carbonated drinks: Fanta and Sprite or 7up are ideal.
  • Cucumber slices
  • Slices of sweet Orange
  • Slices of Lemon
  • A dash of Angostura Bitters (What is this?)
  • Grenadine Syrup
  • Black currant drink like Ribena
  • A bottle of Campari (Optional)
  • A bottle of Zobo (Optional)

Directions for how to make Nigerian Chapman Cocktail drink

How To Make Chapman Drink

Step 1: Pour all the sliced fruits (Cucumber, Lemon, Orange etc) into a large container (Yes! You can even use your Water Dispenser container).

Step 2: Next, pour your Black currant drink, your Fanta and Sprite Carbonated Drinks into the container.

Step 3: Add the Angostura Bitters and Grenadine Syrup and stir.

Step 4: Finally, put it in the refrigerator for about 2 hours and thereafter, served chilled.

How to make Chapman drink with watermelon

To make Chapman drink with Watermelon is quite straight forward. You can decide to add Watermelon slices along with the rest of the ingredients already mentioned here or you can just substitute the Oranges, Cucumbers and Lemon for only Watermelon. It’s all up to you, but i don’t really suggest this, least it eventually turns out looking rather empty.

How to make Chapman with Zobo

When making Chapman with Zobo, just like in the above point when i wrote about Watermelon, you can decide to substitute the black currant drink like Ribena or Black currant concentrate as well as the Carbonated drinks and use just Zobo, or you can just mix it all in there. The more the merrier, right?

How to make Chapman drink with Campari

If you’re an adult and you want to add a little bit of fire to your Chapman drink recipe in the way of some Alcohol, you can simple add a few pours of Campari Italian Liquor to the mix to give it that edge (remember to keep away from the reach of Children o).

Chapman recipe for 100 Guests

If you’re planning on throwing a party or some sort of event and you needed a Chapman recipe for up to 100 of your guests, all you have to do is still follow the above step by step preparations i highlighted above. A for the ingredients you would need, every thing on the list i provided is also solid. But the measurement was purposed to serve up to 16, maybe 20 people.

You can use the below ingredients for your guest of 100. I simply adjusted the quantities of each item on the list to fit:

  • 2 types of carbonated drinks: Fanta and Sprite or 7up are ideal – get a crate
  • Cucumber slices – use 5 Cucumbers
  • Slices of sweet Orange – use 5 Oranges
  • Slices of Lemon – use 5 Lemons
  • A dash of Angostura Bitters – use 3 dashes
  • Grenadine Syrup
  • 5 Black currant drinks like Ribena
  • A bottle of Campari (Optional) – use the entire bottle or half
  • A bottle of Zobo (Optional) – use 5 bottles

Now over to you

Importance of Angostura Bitters and Grenadine Syrup in Nigerian Chapman recipe

  • Angostura Bitters is a concentrated Bitters consisting of herbs and spices that has its origin in the country of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a common ingredient added to most Gins, Vodka and Lemonade and is typically used to prevent stomach upset.

  • Grenadine Syrup is used for its reddish or pinkish color and this is key for making the Chapman drink look like it should.
