For ages, Americans have been debating on what the difference between Cremas (Kremas) and Coquito is.

In the US, Cremasse is sometimes called “Cuban eggnog,” while coquito is known as “Puerto Rican eggnog”

Well in this guide, I’m going to be breaking down this lifelong history of Cremas Vs Coquito.

But first, for you to really understand the bone of contention, it’s important you know each of these Haitian drinks on a more “personal” level.

Cremas Vs Coquito

Often referred to as Haitian Cremas,  Kremas or Cremasse,  this one-of-a-kind Haitian drink is quite popular around the Christmas festive season in the Caribbeans.

It’s main ingredients consist of a combination of Rum, condensed milk, coconut cream, syrup, and spices like nutmeg & cinnamon.

Haitian Cremas are renowned for typically being sweet and thick, almost resembling the consistency of a Milkshake.

One thing to note that usually confuses many is that the color of Kremas is not always consistent.

This is because the final color will always depend largely on the color of Rum that is used to make the Caribbean drink.

On the Blue corner: Coquito Drink

Originally from Puerto Rico, Coquito means “Little Coconut”, and much like it’s rival above, it’s also popularly consumed during the Christmas seasons.

It’s main ingredients consist of Puerto Rican rum, coconut milk, cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon.

Pretty similar to what is obtainable with the Haitian Cremas, isn’t it?

So then what’s the whole fuss about the Cremas vs Coquito brawl?

Is Cremas the same as Coquito?

Not quite.

Cremas Vs Coquito: Differences

Cremas Vs Coquito

Difference #1: Origin

As earlier revealed, while the former originates from Haiti and the Caribbean, Coquito has its roots in Porto Rico.

Difference #2: Ingredients

The major ingredient that differentiates Cremas from Coquito is the presence of Coconut in the later.

I mean, it’s such a huge difference that the entire drink was named after a Coconut!

Cremas Vs Coquito: Similarities

Perhaps on major reason why many confuse Cremas with Coquito is the fact that both are garnished with similar spices which can consist of Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Clove.

Rum is the Alcohol of choice when it comes to these festive drinks, especially Dark Rum. A peek into a glass of Cremas or Coquito laced with Rum and one could get instantly confused for which one is which.

Cremas Vs Coquito: Conclusion

Based on our above points, its easy to conclude that though they share a great deal of traits, they are in fact not the same drink.

Thanks for this sharing the similarity and differences. I love it. I make Kremas, Cremasse every year, and a friend shares her Coquito with me every year. I find that Kremas is thicker and sweeter than Coquito and yes they are different.

As a Haitian_Dominican married to a Puerto Rican woman, you are absolutely correct. They are very similar but not the same. I have grown to like coquito over Kremas, particularly since Kremas is much sweeter (too sweet) and lacks the coconut flavor. Thus, I am totally moved into the Blue corner, since my wife makes coquito every Christmas season! HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE! I won’t totally turn down some crémas if I am offered some. I would just have to add a lot of ice to it, to water it down a bit, since it is too sweet for me. LOL. Thank you for this very interesting article! It is perfect for my culturally blended family. 🙂 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 🙂

Kremas does contain coconut. Depending on who makes it, it also contains lime zest, cinnamon, clove, & nutmeg. Sweetness varies as does the presence of coconut flavor.
