We’ve all been there. You’re on a road trip, far from home and hungry. You pull into the nearest gas station, hoping to find some edible snacks to tide you over until you can make it to a real restaurant.

But what if the gas station food is actually…good? That’s the question we’re asking today as we pit Sheetz food against its competitors in the race for best gas station grub.
In one corner, we have Sheetz. This chain of gas stations/convenience stores is headquartered in Pennsylvania and has locations in six states. Sheetz is known for its made-to-order sandwiches, salads, and pizzas, as well as its large selection of breakfast items. And in the other corner, we have Wawa.
Another Pennsylvania-based chain with locations in six states, Wawa is perhaps best known for its hoagies and its endless array of coffee flavors. So which one deserves the title of best gas station food? Let’s take a closer look.
Sheetz vs. Wawa: The Breakfast Menu
When it comes to breakfast, both Sheetz and Wawa offer a wide selection of items to choose from. However, Sheetz takes the win here thanks to its made-to-order Build Your Own Breakfast Bowls.
These bowls allow you to customize your breakfast by choosing from a variety of base options (potatoes, grits, biscuits), meats (bacon, sausage, ham), veggies (onions, peppers, mushrooms), cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, American), sauces (hollandaise, gravy, ketchup), and toppings (jalapeños, avocado).
Wawa may have a larger selection of breakfast sandwiches, but those can’t compete with the possibilities offered by Sheetz’s Breakfast Bowls.
Sheetz vs. Wawa: The Lunch/Dinner Menu
Both Sheetz and Wawa offer made-to-order sandwiches, salads, pizzas, wraps, and soups for lunch and dinner. However, we think Sheetz has the edge when it comes to sandwich options—specifically their MTO Deli Sandwiches.
These sandwiches come on your choice of white or wheat bread and can be filled with any combination of meat (chicken breast , tuna salad , roast beef , ham , turkey breast ), cheese (American , Swiss , cheddar , provolone ), vegetables (lettuce , tomato , onion , green pepper , pickles ), sauces (mayo , mustard , ranch , Italian dressing ), and toppings (bacon bits , croutons ).
With so many possibilities, it’s hard to imagine ever getting tired of Sheetz’s MTO Deli Sandwiches. Wawa may have more sandwich options overall—hoagies, grilled paninis , flatbreads —but when it comes to customization and variety, Sheetz reigns supreme.
Wawa does have “The Gobbler.” The legendary turkey sandwich is literally Thanksgiving on a bun.Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more. You can almost hear your uncles arguing about politics while you eat it. It’s that close to Thanksgiving.
Sheetz Coffee vs Wawa Coffee
This is one area where I have to give the edge to Wawa. While both Sheetz and Wawa offer a wide variety of coffee flavors, Wawa’s coffees just taste better. They’re smoother and more flavorful, with none of the bitterness that can sometimes plague gas station coffee.
Plus, Wawa offers a wider selection of non-coffee drinks, like tea, hot chocolate, and smoothies. If you’re looking for a refreshing beverage to wash down your gas station meal, Wawa is the way to go.
Sheetz Snacks vs Wawa Snacks
When it comes to snacks, both Sheetz and Wawa offer a wide variety of candy, chips, and other packaged goods. However, Sheetz takes the win here thanks to its made-to-order trail mix.
This mix can be customized with your choice of nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame), dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, apricots), and chocolate chips. It’s a tasty and satisfying snack that’s perfect for munching on while you’re on the go.
Sheetz Has Drive-Thrus, Wawa Doesn’t
This is a minor point, but it’s worth mentioning. If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to leave your car, Sheetz is the place to go—all of their locations have drive-thrus. Wawa does not have any drive-thrus, so you’ll have to park your car and go inside if you want to buy anything.
So there you have it! Our verdict is that Sheetz is the best gas station food—but just barely. Both Sheetz and Wawa offer a wide variety of tasty food options that will definitely hit the spot when you’re on a road trip and far from home.
However, we think Sheetz has the edge when it comes to breakfast and lunch/dinner options thanks to their made-to-order Build Your Own Breakfast Bowls Breakfast Bowl sand MTO Deli Sandwiches MTO Deli Sandwiches respectively. So next time you’re feeling peckish while driving cross-country, make sure to swing by a Sheetz!
